Jack Caron rode the Fireweed in the past and was struck by a car while training on his bike in December 2010 and killed. This year Team Crazy Jack will enter and Jack Caron will be their phantom rider.

Kevin Montague writes: "Like Van the Man sang - "soul is the answer, the answer from within - soul is where everything begins". The lot of us "Pagan Soles" lost a dear friend and soulful team mate this past Christmas on the Seward highway to a drunk driver. Jack Caron was like my third brother - he was one of those wild & crazy Girdwood bachelor dudes that danced on tables at the Sitz, skied hard, worked hard - loved life and was loved in return. Jack was also a bushrat like me and others - working and living the DEW line. In the spring Jack would take his mountain bike with him to work  - Cape Romanzof, Cape Newenham, Indian Mtn., Tin City and other real Alaskan places and train hard for this Race... up the mountain to top camp and then down to the beach... talk about headwinds!  We remember a story of him blazing across New Zealand once for a U2 concert! Jack had this old Raleigh from the 70s' that he always used - he had painted it a few times , sew-ups, a classic - we're bringing it along this year. Jack was always our starter...

Jack was killed in an automobile accident at Buluga Point - he wasn't training on his bike that afternoon. Jack had just retired from the Operating Engineers Local 302 in September and had traveled to Costa Rica and Nicaragua for a wedding and then to his mothers home in Florida for Thanksgiving with all his family. He was working out training and biking hard down in Florida for @ 2 months and returned home to Girdwood less 30 lbs - Jack was on top of his game was all tuned up for skiing. He had borrowed a Genie -lift from his neighbor Tim Cabana to caulk some upper windows and a part had broken on the lift - Jack had gone into Anchorage to buy a repair part and was returning home to Girdwood to fix the lift when he was hit by the impaired driver. My boys and I had to pass by his mangled Jeep that evening on the highway - we had been in Chickaloon that day chopping our Christmas tree - we were returning home also. My daughter and our neighbor Judy were right behind Jack on their way home - they were less than 5 minutes away from being in that accident with that drunk driver.

We're sharing some of Jacks' soul this summer in the Fireweed... we're remembering our friend by entering Jack as our 4th rider in the Double Century to Valdez. Teams like "Crazy JACK", "One Eyed JACKS" and "JACKS Back" will be carrying Jacks spirit with them to Valdez - as you can see, we're still having a lot of fun with Jack! So come July 9th, if you see a rider wearing one of Jack's old biking t-shirts with "JACK" scribed all over it, give him or her a high five because really ...  "soul is the answer... it's where everything begins."
