Fireweed 400: New-on-the-Scene
Riders Donley and Beck Win Divisions

VALDEZ -- Alaska's own mini Tour de France, the Fireweed 400 endurance cycling event, saw some familiar faces winning different races Saturday.

Kevin Donley of Anchorage, a fairly new cyclist, won the 100-mile division, and Jens Beck, known first as a triathlete, captured the 50-mile event with nearly 20 minutes to spare. In all, more than 400 cyclists in four different races took off from the Sheep Mountain Lodge starting line.

"What a surprise," Donley said, as if he couldn't believe what he had just accomplished. "I had no idea." As Donley's friend, Beck congratulated him. Donley just shook his head.

"I knew I had some endurance, but I have not been riding that long," he said.

Donley and second-place finisher Matt Novakovich rode together most of the way, pacing with a handful of other riders. About five miles out, they broke away from the other riders, launching a guessing game of who would sprint first.

At the last big hill approaching the lodge, Donley decided to go for it.

"I figured I had to do it at the hill or never," he said. "Matt definitely did the lion's share of the work, because he had the record on his mind."

Novakovich congratulated Donley at the finish, shaking hands and sharing tales of a fiercely windy route with occasional rain squalls amid the sunshine.

Beck, who raced the 400-mile Fireweed two years ago and the 100-mile event last year, opted for the shorter race this year because he is training for a Hawaii Ironman Triathlon qualifier later this summer. He raced across the finish line long before his competitors, with a time of 2 hours, 13 minutes and 36 seconds.

Moments later, he was off on a 25-mile training ride.

"When you have to work at the downhills, that is something else," he said of the headwinds on the return trip. "Wow. It was pretty big, especially coming over the top (of Eureka Summit), the last five miles."

Eagle River's Kirby Senden, the 32-year-old athletic director at Chugiak High, took second in his first-ever bike race, perhaps etching in stone a future cycling addiction.

"I bought a bike in May," he said. "I did that (Hiland Road) climb about six days after buying the bike and wasn't sure this was the sport for me. But I just kept riding."

Sheryl Loan handily won the women's 100 in 4 hours, 28 minutes, 11 seconds. Shelly James was second in 4:42:51.

In the women's 50-miler, Stacy Steinberg was the only racer to break the three-hour barrier, finishing in 2:58:13. Caitlin Yarborough was second in 3:04:22.6 while Pamela Weiss was third in 3:04:22.8.

The 200-mile event, from Sheep Mountain to Valdez, featured an exciting sprint to the finish that left officials calling the race a toss-up.

Veteran racer Walt Nestell, the former Alaskan who now lives in Washington, and Florida's Jeff Carson duked it out to the end, after drafting and pacing together for 99 percent of the race.

In the end, they decided they would share the winner's title because they worked so well together throughout the race, which was in its second year.

The 400-mile soloists, who rode to Valdez and back, were expected into Sheep Mountain Lodge sometime early this morning.

Racers enjoyed a tailwind at the beginning of the race, but the course's windy, steep topography made the course unpredictable.

Before the start, Novakovich wondered aloud about the conditions. If the tailwind helped him at the beginning, that would be good, he said. But the last thing he wanted was a strong headwind on the tiring return trip.

That's just what he got.

As soon as riders reached Eureka Summit, expecting an easy downhill ride back to the lodge, they were blasted with headwinds and fought to keep their momentum.

Novakovich, last year's 100-miler winner, was the only cyclist to ride with a rear disc wheel, a gamble in unpredictable winds. In crosswinds, the air butts against the solid wheels -- but in head and tailwinds, they can add critical seconds to a cyclist's speed.

Novakovich wanted to beat his 2004 time of 4 hours 4 minutes, and halfway into the race he said his pace had him on track for a new record.

But once he turned into the wind, that dream died, and he fell short by nearly 8 minutes.

Donley's time was 4:08.46; Novakovich finished in 4:11.58.

"I felt pretty good until about Mile 85, and the last five miles I started feeling cramps in my legs," Novakovich said. "I said (to Donley), 'I've got good news. If you feel good, you've got this won.' He was super strong."

Other riders were just happy for good weather Saturday. Bright sunshine left cyclists slathering each other in sunscreen and switching their riding glasses to their darkest lenses before the race. Long-sleeve jerseys were shed in favor of tank tops and short sleeves.

"I was a little worried about it, because we drove through rain getting here (Friday)," said Colin Singleton of Eagle River, 15, who signed up for the 50-mile division race and placed third. "I'm just glad for the sun."

Just three years ago, the Fireweed 400 was minor affair, with just 150 participants signed up for three distances, the 50-mile, 100-mile and 400-mile events, which can be raced solo or in teams (there is now a 200-mile event as well).

The 400-miler attracted ultra-endurance cyclists aiming for distance races such as the Race Across America, a 3,000-plus mile cross-country race that has had fewer than 500 solo finishers in its 24-year history, including Eagle River's Ben Couturier this year. Couturier won the Fireweed 400 last year.

As one of few Race Across America-qualifying events, the Fireweed 400 course is proving attractive to cyclists -- not only for its distance, but for the spectacular scenery along the way. As the course winds along the Glenn and Richardson highways to Valdez and back, cyclists may see wildlife, are wowed by mountain vistas and pass Worthington Glacier, Bridal Veil Falls and Thompson and Eureka passes.

"It's sort of considered an adventure as well as a bike race," said Johnny Boswell, a Race Across America official from Texas who signed up for the 200-mile Fireweed this year. "People are beginning to talk about this race. It probably will become one of the more popular RAAM qualifiers because it is pretty and it's challenging."

Indeed, the race is growing, almost exponentially. In the three years since it started, participation has gone from 150 to, this year, more than 400 competitors. Race director Peter Lekisch said he ran out of T-shirts, and has had to order more. Sheep Mountain Lodge owner Zach Steer said tent space had to be expanded.

"It's the first year we've had porta-potties," Steer said. "I'm really glad we did that or we'd have been in trouble."

Lekisch said next year's race may need to be limited to the first 500 participants. With so many cyclists on the road, he worries about the dangers posed by bikes mingling with the sometimes heavy traffic of summer tourists.

"It's still something we'd have to take up with the race committee, but I think we should try to put on the best race we can with the volunteers we have," he said. "It will make it a safe race, and a race that everyone can still enjoy."
